Common Bugs To Catch

There are over 900,000 different known species of insects in the world, and many have not yet been identified. There are some estimates that say there over 2 million species in total. It is also estimated that there are over 10 quintillion insects are alive on the Earth at a time. That is a lot of bugs! Obviously tracking down and learning about all these insects is not possible.

This article will list some of the most common bugs you will be able to find in your own backyard or around your local park. The most common bugs in the United States are from the animal orders of flies, beetles, butterflies, and ants. These creatures are not only fun to catch, but are very interesting to learn about as well.


Ladybug
Also known as ladybirds, these bugs are bright red. They can be found on leaves of plants looking for aphids to eat.

Butterfly
These insects are found fluttering around flowers looking for nectar. Butterflies are one of the best pollinators.

Grasshopper
Just as their name describes, you will find these bugs hopping around the fields of grass that they feed on.

Roly Poly
These little guys can be found in dirt, bark, or under rocks. Touch a roly poly and it will roll up into a protective ball.


Honey Bee
Found around flowers, bees gather nectar to eat. They are a social and live in communities. Be careful of their sting!

Praying Mantis
These bugs blend into green grass and leaves and barely move. Being predators, they feed on other insects.

Spider
Spiders can be found all over the world. If you happen to find a web, chances are that a spider is not very far off.

Caterpillar
Caterpillars are the larval form of butterflies. Caterpillars can typically be found on plants or trees feeding on the leaves.
